First Love: Dating

The First Love series takes a look at how different individuals in the community keep Christ the first loves in their lives. Meet Jairo Martinez and Adalis Martinez, a couple who has been dating for a few years.

Adalis and I are doers. Not only do we love to learn and absorb but we like to put our knowledge to good. Placing Jesus at the center of our relationship has meant three significant things for us:

  1. Honor one another above all

  2. Are we more like Jesus today than yesterday?

  3. Treat each other as brothers and sisters in Christ first before we can ever think of each other as a couple.

our love is not shown by winning the argument but by losing our selfishness.

Adalis and I call each other out in sin, encourage each other to repent, and above all, aim to display Christ-like grace to each other. We love each other so much that we want to see each other look more like Jesus. We see growth in one another and we celebrate it. We honor each other by serving one another. We honor each other by listening and communicating and we restrain from using words that can tear each other down. A testament to our relationship is the way we treat each other in times of strong disagreements. We constantly remind ourselves that our love is not shown by winning the argument but by losing our selfishness. By nature we know we are sinful and selfish but we also know that all the good that is in us comes from God. He is the fuel to our lives as Christians and the fuel to our growth. The cross is the best example of true love.

*We both chose to pick something we love about each other*

Adalis: I love the way Jairo loves people! His willingness to serve and count himself last was what really attracted me to him. He mirrors Jesus so well when he chooses to love those who hurt him, care for those who don’t even ask and display grace to every challenging circumstance. I am fascinated by how much the Lord has grown in us, and we take no credit.

Adalis has grown from someone who didn’t know Christ to someone who teaches me about Him

Jairo: In 2012 when Adalis was diagnosed with colon cancer she was a completely different person than when we met. I've never felt closer to a person in my life until this time. Displaying Christ was hard when all I wanted was to be in her place. I remained patient. Throughout this time, Adalis has grown from someone who didn’t know Christ to someone who teaches me about him; not only through her words but through her actions and faith. As I see how she loves on her family and friends who don't share her faith, I realize that me bringing her to church and her meeting Jesus was none of my doing but His. She is an inspiration.

***There has been a slight change since this article was originally proposed to them. Adalis and Jairo are engaged!!*****
